SCAM

Hello Everyone,

It has been brought to my attention of a possible scam situation where they attempted to possibly commit a home burglary. Though due to the quick thinking of this individual the burglary did take place.

A woman had called this person and stated they were calling from the Gas Company Energy Savings Assistance(ESA) Program and wanted to setup an appointment to inspect the house to see whether it was eligible for free energy updates to improve energy consumption.

They stated their name but mumbled it and when they were asked again to repeating to be home their name they stated they would give them their card when they came.

They asked whether this person would be home between10:00 and 11:00am Monday and when this person said yes, the caller advised them they would call before they arrived.

The person was aware that the Gas Company did have an assistance program, but this also made them think about the way some potential burglars can check to see if anyone is going to be at this residence. So they called the Gas Company and they gave them the phone number for the Energy Savings Assistance Program. The woman this person spoke with stated they were suspicious because any of the companies who do that type of work for the Gas Company always identify themselves as the Gas Company has over 50 such companies working for them.

I would like to suggest if any of you receive a similar phone call to get in touch with the Gas Companies ESA Program by calling800-331-7593 to verify whether the call they just received is legitimate.

Keep in mind that it is usually the practice of the Gas Company to slip an ad flier in your bill statement or mail you an additional notice with a number to call if you are interested.

DO NOT agree by phone to have anyone trying to sell something or offering a free service by setting up an in home appointment.

And remember, NEVER open your door to a stranger, but let them know someone is home by talking through the door or at a front window that you are not interested and to please leave or you will call the police.
